Currently Listening To: The Christmas Edition

For me there's three types of Christmas songs. The classics, the actual classical ones, and the modern ones. My all time favourite-its-not-actually-christmas-really-is-it-if-you-dont-listen-to-these
Christmas songs are the classics. As in all the ones from the 70s/80s.
So as I've not done a Currently Listening To in a (way too long) while, I thought I'd do a special christmas edition, as it is, after all, the month of Christmas.

The Pogues - Fairytale Of New York, I genuinely feel like Christmas isn't Christmas without this song. As a child it was my favourite, I always loved songs that started slow and calm then turned into a something huge and amazing. Flashdance was my favourite back then. And I loved how this just explodes with insults, my fave being "you scumbag you maggot you cheap lousy faggot" it's just great. And the song tells a story of real life which we know I gotta love.

The Darkness - Christmas Time, this was always fun to rock out to as a kid but I genuinely really love this now, it's more my kind of music (but you really do have to ignore the outfits and the hair) with the guitars and stuff, I think I've been listening to this one more than most this year...

The Pretenders - 2000 Miles, I love this one so much but I really don't listen to it enough, it's such a pretty sounding song but it's not jingly and upbeat as Christmas songs tend to be, which might be why I don't think of this song when I think "lets listen to Christmas songs" but I do absolutely adore this song and it reminds me of when I was a wee child and me and my sister would run around the coffee table pouring our hearts out.

Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone, I don't know anyone who doesn't love a bit of Shakin' Stevens at Christmas. I mean, this song is literally everything you need a Christmas song to be, it's jingly, it's upbeat, very easy to sing along to, will stay in your head forever, and is still singable when you're too drunk to remember the words...

John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over), I don't listen to this one enough either, this is one of those songs that you know all the words to when it comes on, but always forget to listen to it out of choice. We listened to it every year whilst putting the tree up, and I would be in my absolute element just listening to the song and hanging baubles pretending I was an adult (oh how the tables turn)

Jona Lexie - Stop The Cavalry, a few years ago this, and all I want for christmas was the only two christmas songs I listened to. The "dum dum dum" bit in this song penetrates into your skull and stays there the entirety of Christmas, it's so catchy it's unreal!

East 17 - Stay Another Day, this is the least Christmassy song, but can you go a Christmas without listening to it? I know I can't, the music video is the cheesiest thing I've ever seen and I do cry a little bit with laughter every time I see it, but it's a beautiful song with a sad story and somehow makes Christmas, Christmas.

Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, one of the most classic childhood memory song for me, we used to run around the living room thinking we were dancing, my dad would be at his computer laughing at us, my mum cooking dinner... I can still smell and see that house as everything was back then, oh my god the star baubles that were made of polystyrene that me and my sister loved to sneakily pulling apart and acting completely shocked at how it happened when my mum saw it! (lil flashback there oh wow...)

Mud - Lonely This Christmas, Christmas is either the happiest thing in the world or the saddest, and Christmas songs are the exact same, after bouncing round the house with my sister I'd then listen to this and create a little story in my head about this guy's life, and to be honest I still do.

Wham! - Last Christmas, the most popular, classic of classics. it's constantly on the radios, in the shops, everywhere you go, this song will be played. And somehow I haven't heard enough of it, you'd have thought the song would drive me mad by now, but it doesn't and that's probably because of my utter obsession with Christmas...

Cliff Richard - Mistletoe And Wine, this video again, makes me cry with laughter at the swaying/clicking bit it's too funny. But the song is one of my favourites, it's always in my head and it captures the essence of Christmas so well.

I can't make this post any longer because that would be ridiculous, there's so many great Christmas songs to talk about yet! I'm hoping to get one up on my favourite modern Christmas songs too, but for now, while I'm on my break I'm going to get some washing done and boring house things. And maybe start my wrapping...
